EraThink EraPalm runs like a netbook, looks like a portable gaming handheld

Looking at this odd bird of a device on display at the China Consumer Electronics Fair inspires tired cliches about mating gadgets. But really, it took a wild night between a Windows 7 tablet and a portable gaming console (with a possible cameo by a UMPC) to spawn the EraThink EraPalm. This handheld runs Windows 7 and has a 5-inch (800 x 480) capacative touchscreen that slides out to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard -- all of which is reminiscent of the extinct OQO Model 02, except for the gaming controls flanking the display. Newpad spent some with the little guy, and reports some netbook-like specs including an unspecified Atom Z processor, 3G connectivity, and Ethernet, HDMI, VGA, and USB ports. Japan disaster disrupts Xperia Arc/Play supplies, delays Neo

 

It looks like the delays that Sony Ericsson warned would result from the recent natural disasters in Japan have finally arrived. UK retailer Clove reports on its company blog that the European release date for the Xperia Neo has slipped to July as a result of supply chain disruption brought about by the disasters in Japan. Clove also reports that Xperia Play and Xperia Arc stocks are expected to be running low over the next few weeks.

Today's news follows delays to last week's Xperia Play and Arc launch on some UK networks, which were attricuted to "freight issues", though carriers say they're expecting additional stock of both phones throughout April. [Clove Blog]

Top Facebook scams revealed by BitDefender (infographic)

Security company BitDefender -- which recently released the Safego app to protect your Facebook account -- has put together an infographic illustrating information about the state of scams on the social networking site.

At an impressive 7,532 pixels tall, the graphic offers plenty of insight into the dark underbelly of Facebook. The company found profile insight apps -- like those which promise to show you who's viewing your page and who deleted you -- to be the most widespread scam. BitDefender estimates that this particular type of scam has generated more than 1.4 million clickthroughs. Facebook's popular social games are a common trap as well, but are in a distant second, with less than half the clickthroughs.

Somewhat surprisingly, shocking image and video posts came in at number three on the list. We've seen so many of this type of scam appear in our security feeds that we thought they'd be the most common.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Purported Verizon screenshot points to LTE-upgradable 16GB Motorola Xoom

The Motorola Xoom might be starting to look a bit pricey compared to some of its new competitors, but it seems that the company may have a solution in the offing. According to a leaked, supposedly authentic Verizon screenshot obtained by Droid Life, Motorola is apparently planning to launch an LTE-upgradable Xoom with just 16GB of storage instead of the current 32GB, which would presumably also open the door for a cheaper 16GB WiFi-only model. Of course, that's still a long way from being official, but cutting the storage in half is certainly one sure way to make a (seemingly necessary) price drop a bit more bearable.

House Votes Against FCC Net Neutrality Regulation (But It?s Probably Safe For Now)

Last December the FCC approved its "Preserving the Open Internet" regulation to ban blocking of websites or web services by broadband providers, while being equally vague about what the new restrictions held for mobile carriers like Verizon and AT&T. As we said in December, Republicans had vowed to give the loophole-filled rules hell when the Congress turned more Republican in January. Today we see the fruits of their efforts, namely the voting through of�House Joint Resolution 37, a regulation that would prohibit the FCC��from having any authority over ISPs and broadband, thus overturning December's regulations.

Google Places Swallows The Awkwardly Named ?Hotpot?

I can't recall Google pushing a product as hard as they've pushed Hotpot on their blogs in recent months. I swear that on a daily basis there's some sort of update about "what's new with Hotpot". The only problem? I have basically no idea what Hotpot is. I mean, I sort of do, but it's such a bad name and it's a product that seems to overlap with other Google products, so I just don't get it. And now I don't have to. Google is killing off the Hotpot name, as they're announcing in about five blog posts today. But they're not killing the product itself ? instead, it will now reside as a part of Google Places. They're calling it a "graduation". I'm calling it a "gorging". And it's definitely the right move.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.

Test subjects with electrode implants use mind control to move a cursor

As trippy as mind-control still seems to us, we've already seen it implemented in everything from wheelchairs to pricey gaming (and car driving!) headsets. But the problem is that they measure brain activity outside the skull -- you know, the thing we've evolved to shield the murky goings-on in our minds from prying EEG sensors.

Now, though, a team of Washington University researchers appears to have happened upon a more effective -- albeit, invasive -- approach. The researchers got some brave specimens to move a mouse cursor by implanting plastic pads containing electrodes underneath their skulls, with the sensors sitting on the surface of the brain. That, they say, gives them access to more telling, high-frequency waves that say a lot more about cognitive intentions. In the end, the subjects moved the cursors by thinking one of these sounds: "ee," "ah," "oo," and "eh." Brain-computer interfaces ain't new, of course, but the scientists say the subjects with electrode implants had more success than people wearing electrode-studded EEG caps, which could translate to less frustration for people with severe disabilities.

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

House of Representatives votes to block FCC's net neutrality rules

Well, it looks like Republicans in the House of Representatives weren't about to let this one slip past a possible government shutdown -- they just passed a measure that seeks to block the FCC's net neutrality rules by a largely party line vote of 240 to 179. That follows a House subcommittee vote last month but, as then, the bill still faces an uphill battle in the Senate and with the President, who's expected to veto any such legislation if it somehow got to his desk. Not surprisingly, the rhetoric from both sides is only increasing following this latest development, with Democrat Rep. Henry Waxman saying the Republican bill would "end the internet as we know it," while Republican Rep. Fred Upton argues that "the internet is not broken and this bill will assure that the FCC does not break it."

Doom 2 gets ported to PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader (video)

Porting Doom to unexpected devices may be one of the oldest tricks in the game-porting book, but seeing it (or Doom 2, no less) run in a somewhat playable fashion on an e-reader is still a feat worth noting. That was recently done on the as yet unreleased PocketBook 360 Plus e-reader, apparently in an effort to demonstrate its new Pearl E Ink display and Freescale processor. Head on past the break to check out the results for yourself -- and, no, Doom 2 unfortunately won't actually be included with the e-reader.

500 Startups Demo Day: Like Pulse For Facebook, Ninua Launches Its News Sharing App For Android

It was another fast-paced day at 500 Startups' open house in Mountain View today, as Dave McClure and company officially introduced the world to its first batch of killer startups. One of the many stellar demos came from Ninua, a startup that is building social apps around news, blogs, and social media. Its recently launched Ninua News Reader is a news-sharing application for Android that recommends articles and blog posts that people in your network are writing or sharing. It allows for the automatic curation of what appears in your stream, based on your interests as well as your friends? interests. Not another news aggregator, you may be muttering. Well, yes, but it has a slight twist. It's Facebook enabled -- and built on a blog platform.

Google Registers A Bunch Of Music And Cloud Related Domain Names

Earlier this week, Google registered a slew of .com domain names related to music and clouds. A tipster points out that the Internet company registered names like GoogleBass.com, GoogleAlto.com, GoogleSoprano and GoogleTenor.com along with GoogleNebula.com, GoogleThunder.com and GoogleLightning.com. None of them resolve to an actual website (at least not yet), but WHOIS searches reveal they were all registered by Google last Wednesday.
